Last weekend marked the first action in the world of club sports, and Oregon’s teams started the season in fine fashion.
Hockey
The Oregon club hockey team defeated the Oregon alumni squad 6-2 last Saturday.
In the informal contest that coordinator Jeff Gibb described as a “preseason scrimmage,” the Ducks opposition was mainly members of the 2005 Intercollegiate Pac-8 Championship team.
Junior forward Colton Clay and freshman Sam Cehula each scored one goal. Ducks forward Mike Tornabene, one of Oregon’s most prolific scorers, also netted a few goals, Gibb said.
Oregon next hosts Washington State University Friday and Saturday at the Lane Events Ice Center. The two-game series has games at 7 p.m. each night.
Men’s water polo
The 10th-ranked Oregon men’s water polo team dominated in the Central Washington Tournament to open season play last Thursday.
In four days of competition, the Ducks beat the University of Portland 19-6, Western Oregon University 19-7, the University of Washington B team 12-5 and Central Washington University 15-3.
The Ducks are now 4-0 and, after picking up eight points in the tourney, are tied with Purdue at No. 10 on the Men’s Collegiate Club top 20 poll with 46 total points .
“We don’t have any stars,” said coordinator and coach Jon Ashford. “We just played everybody. We are focused on team play.”
Oregon travels to the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis Saturday to take on Central Washington, Washington, Washington’s B team and Oregon State starting at 11:55 a.m.
Running club
In Salem, the eight Oregon running club members competed in the Willamette Invitational last Saturday. Freshman Caitlin Grimwood ran the 5 kilometers in 22:51.
In the men’s 8-mile run, Oregon finished 14th out of 20 teams. Conor O’Brien registered a team-best 26:29.35 and came in 107th place out of 228 runners.
The squad next competes in the Lewis & Clark Pioneer Open in Estacada on Saturday, Oct. 14.
