An unidentified gunman robbed the Hilyard Street Market convenience store late Wednesday, evading capture with hundreds of dollars from the cash register.
After the gunman fled, the clerk, Lane Community College student Cody Mitchell, sat on the curb outside the store, located at 1698 Hilyard St., with his legs dangling into the torn-up street. He appeared shaken and said he had never been robbed at gunpoint before.
Mitchell, who was interviewed later, described the scene. A middle-aged man, about 5’8″ in height, walked into the market at approximately 10:45 p.m. The man took a Gatorade from the cooler and approached the counter where Mitchell stood behind the register.
“I need some money,” Mitchell said the man softly told him.
Mitchell said he thought the man was asking for change until he repeated himself twice, each time more aggressively, before he pulled a handgun from his belt. After this, Mitchell opened the register and handed the man $450. The man ran out the door and Mitchell called the police.
“It’s still kind of a whodunit,” Eugene Police Sergeant Rich Stronach said.
Stronach said the police found a man nearby who Mitchell identified as the assailant. The man turned out not to be the robber, Stronach said, but he had a warrant out for his arrest on different charges. The investigation has now hit a standstill, and the police urge anyone with relevant information to contact the violent crimes officer at (541) 682-5172.
