When the Oregon State Board of Higher Education gives their final say on the sale of the Westmoreland Apartment Complex,
they should keep the consensus of the Eugene community in mind and veto the sale.
The campus community has consistently voiced louder and more fervent disapproval, and the list of opponents seems to have grown each week since the University announced the sale in October. Those who live at the complex or are members of the Save Westmoreland Coalition aren’t the only ones who oppose the sale. Others in opposition include the bodies that represent University faculty and students, groups that represent
neighborhoods near campus, the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation, legislators and this even newspaper.
When the State Board came to Eugene in June to hear testimony from community members, the only people who voiced support
were those in the University administration, who said proceeds from the sale could be used to pay of debt and go into savings for future dorms. All of the remaining 100 or so people who came to the hearing showed disapproval.
The community has made its opinion obvious. The board should look beyond the fiscal points of the administration and listen to those who the sale directly affects and keep the apartment complex.
OUS should listen to the community on housing
