With the return to classes, we find ourselves just a few weeks away from an election. It is vital that those of you who are eligible take the time to register to vote and then vote. The stakes are particularly high this year as some of the ballot measures in Oregon are far-reaching.
For a democracy to work, we must not only vote; we must find our voice and speak it and search out other voices and listen. We need to create new common forums, the modern equivalent of the old village square and fill it with participants who are willing to move beyond partisan positions.
I urge each of you in this coming year to find ways to do this – find ways to be citizens who look beyond self-interest and ask not what serves me, my party or my special interest group but what serves the broader community.
