With catchy melodies and sultry but sweet voices, -Nous Non Plus (meaning “we neither” or “neither do we”) hits the mark with its self-titled release filled with poppy rock songs sung mostly in French.
Although most band members hail from the United States (from Boston to San Francisco and a few cities in between), -Nous Non Plus, composed of former members of the New York band Les Sans
Culottes, derived its unique sound from French pop. Those influences can clearly be heard in songs like “Fille Atomique” and “Monokini,” an
appealing tune layered with horns and breathy vocals.
It’s almost impossible to resist the upbeat and rocking “Lawnmower Boy,” which makes you want to sing along, even if you have no idea what they’re actually saying. “One Night In Paris,” named after Paris Hilton’s
infamous grainy, night-vision porn, is the only song sung entirely in English. It’s a funky and silly homage to the Hilton heirhead with lyrics like, “I saw her playing with her dog. She calls her ‘Tinkerbell’ and she’s got a better life than mine.”
Toward the end of the album, -Nous Non Plus mellows out with tunes like “Premier Basier,” the haunting
“La Ballade de Tourette” and the completely instrumental “AprÃ
