I am writing in response to the article about Eva Gollinger’s speech given at the Law School on Tuesday night (“Speech examines U.S. intervention in Venezuela,” ODE May 17). I wish Colette Crouse had done a little more homework regarding the reality of the situation versus the claims made by Ms. Gollinger. Quite frankly, Eva Gollinger is a mouthpiece for the Chavez regime. Hugo Chavez is a communist and a thug. If you look at all the positive claims (and that’s all they are, claims) made by Ms. Gollinger, they come straight from the play-book of Marxist dictatorships. Mouthpieces for the communist governments of Cuba, China, and the former Soviet Union have all made the same claims (the people’s government, no illiteracy, free health care), none of which stand up under the light of truth. Communist nations are “the people’s government” because everyone is too frightened to speak the truth. They do work to reduce illiteracy, but only to indoctrinate the children (you can read Jonny, you just can’t read anything that’s true!). The health care is free, but essentially non-existent for the average peasant.
It is probably true that the U.S. government has sought to destabilize the Chavez regime, because fighting communism has been the policy of our government since the Russian revolution Personally, I don’t see the difference between a right wing dictatorship and a left wing dictatorship, but the U.S. government does and has done so for nearly a century. So what’s the big surprise? That we meddle? Grow up, lady! There is not a nation on this Earth that doesn’t employ espionage and sabotage in its own interests. I also challenge her to produce any CIA documents she has, otherwise her claim to have the “top secret” documents is no more than a McCarthy-esque gambit. If you’ve got the proof, produce it.
Goodness gracious, polar opposites like Condi Rice and No-blink Pelosi are in agreement about Chavez being no good. What does that tell you? The bottom line is that Venezuela is just another hopelessly corrupt, third world nation with oil. It has nearly always been run by dictators, “elected” or not. Chavez is no different.
