The “Food Police” here and you are under arrest for being an inhumane, ignorant and whiny college student! Usually I would not waste my time responding to an editorial column written in a small college newspaper with no other purpose but to ruffle feathers, but your ignorance touched on one too many buttons and I simply could not resist (“‘Enlightened’ food police are just annoying,” ODE May 1, 2007).
If it were not for you destroying the planet we share and inhumanely and unnecessarily taking the lives of animals simply to satisfy your taste buds, I would leave you to your own slow, artery-clogged death. However, since your actions directly affect my life and the future life of generations to come there is a very real need for the so-called “food police” to try and help you overcome your ignorance.
I think the most disturbing part of your opinion piece came in the second to last paragraph. “Not only do they care about what you ingest, and are willing to outlaw food that displeases them, they want to transplant their food hang-ups on anyone with an appetite, at the expense of culture or taste.” Since when does caring about the environment and the way another living animal is treated equate to a food hang-up? You make it sound like such a flippant thing. Is a culture built on cruelty a culture worth keeping? I guess if you had your druthers, you would have never outlawed slavery, huh? We had been keeping people in bondage for “time immemorial,” right? I mean why should civil rights leaders be able to tell you what to with do with minorities. Your life is worth more than theirs, right?
Remember, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Just because you have been doing it for an extended period of time doesn’t make it right.
It is my opinion that you can’t have it both ways. You can’t continue to exhibit an ignorant behavior and not expect to be called out for it. Get used to the “Food Police” being in your face. For as long as there are slow learners like yourself running around, there will the members of the “Food Police” there to guide you down the right path.
