Today in the EMU Ballroom from 12 to 5 p.m., the Career Center’s Winter Career Fair will host a wide range of employers searching for graduating students on the prowl for jobs – both full-time positions and internships – to fill summer days and resumes.
“(This year’s employers) are an eclectic crowd – not just corporate America, but employers from the public sector, government, non-profit and organizations like Teach for America,” said the University’s Career Center Director Deb Chereck. “I am more excited about this fair than I have been in a long time.”
Participating companies include US Bank, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Target, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Oregonlive.com, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Frito-Lay and a variety of consulting companies.
“Consulting is a place we would like to grow because a number of disciplines can be interested by this field, from economics, psychology, to language” Chereck said.
A full list of employers can be found today in a packet that will be in front of both the Career Center and the EMU. The handout will contain companies’ Web sites, short blurbs about them and whether they are giving interviews.
Oregon Daily Emerald: What should students wear?
Deb Chereck: Business casual. Think of this as a hiring opportunity. You only get to make a first impression once. We are very glad everyone comes, even if it is between classes, but leave your backpacks at the door.
ODE: What should students ask employers?
DC: The worst thing to ask is: “What do you do?”. A better question would be, “What are your hiring needs?” or “What are your internship opportunities for the summer?” Try to prepare a little before the fair, research the company online. Be prepared to give an elevator speech, or a 1 to 2 minute pitch, on yourself: what you love, what year in school you are, and what you are looking for. Make sure to bring a resume.
