Students have the chance to find out how they can become more involved in sustainable practices today. Keen, a Portland shoe company, is hosting the Hybrid.Stand event today at 6 p.m. in 100 Willamette. The event includes a speech by Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy and a showing of a documentary that features nine people who have new ideas on sustainability.
Keen is visiting 50 schools around the country to promote sustainability. The Oregon-based company decided to visit Eugene because of its reputation as a leader in sustainability, said University senior Molly Hart, who helped bring the campaign to the University.
“They know Eugene definitely has a sustainability presence and has an interest in this topic,” Hart said.
Students also have the chance to enter an online contest at www.keenfootwear.com/stand that runs until Dec. 31. The company will award a total of $150,000 for students who want to start projects related to sustainability.
At the end of tonight’s event, students can help choose a project for a $1,000 award. Students can also sign a canvas that will be displayed at a Portland festival in June 2008.
Hart said the University’s Sustainable Business Group and the American Marketing Association is sponsoring tonight’s event.
