The historic McDonald Theatre in downtown Eugene was transformed last Monday night into a vibrant and worldly dance hall. Set against a backdrop of large columns, tribal beats and colorful, illuminating lights, it was easy to imagine you had been transported into a South American cantina. Despite a smaller turnout than anticipated, Ozomatli performed with soul and enthusiasm that was, to say the very least, contagious.
A diverse crowd came out to see the three-time Grammy Award-winning band; the audience was as varied as the band itself. As soon as the Latin beats began pulsating through the crowd, the dance floor gained a life of its own with attendees performing traditional Latin dance and modern dance.
The band’s selections came primarily from its fourth full-length studio album, “Don’t Mess with the Dragon,” which was released last April. The band’s eccentric show had such natural power and rhythm that it made the recorded album seem dull in comparison. The band’s Ozo on Ice Winter Tour is scheduled to travel throughout Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado and Utah. Ozomatli has special guests traveling along with the band this tour. Both vocalists, they help enrich the album’s eclectic beat. Tre Hardson’s smooth vocals add a level of sophistication to the band, while Hope Clayburn’s vocals mix delicately to create a reggae-infused balance.
The relatively small turnout of roughly 300 people was surprising, considering the band performed on campus last September in front of more than a thousand students. Despite the audience turnout, Ozomatli shared its political message with those present, not surprising for a band that met through a justice protest in downtown Los Angeles. The band members’ message was simple yet powerful: “No more war – peace.”
No matter your political ideology or musical preference, this Los Angeles-born band had the perfect balance of rock ‘n’ roll, salsa and percussion to suite a vast array of styles, which is why it makes a perfect fit for the city of Eugene.
