I don’t mean to be harsh, but here are the icy cold facts: You are going to die. Your children will die. And your children’s children will one day die too. This is why political candidates, the environment, and civilization don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. You don’t need to work for a better tomorrow because one day tomorrow will be today, and you’ll be kicking the bucket, pushing daisies, and moving on to a better place. In 2000 years, do you think archeologists are going to be learning about our culture’s voting habits, or how every family in America had a little black box that displayed magical images transmitted through thin air? Pop culture always has been, and will always continue to be the most historically rewarding facet in discovering the past. For example, most people seem to have at least heard of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel sketches (pop culture). But how many people – off the top of their heads – know why he painted it, under whose rule, and whether or not he was medically covered if he fell off scaffoldings?
This morbid and seemingly inane rant has a vaguely relevant purpose. To quote John Cusack in High Fidelity: “What really matters is what you like, not what you are like. Books, records, films – these things matter. Call me shallow; it’s the fucking truth.” Deep down you know this statement is true, because: a) it’s obviously true, b) John Cusack would never lie to you, c) Cusack’s character immediately slept with the absurdly hot Lisa Bonet character two minutes following this quote, and d) you’re noticing your time with OSPIRG and the College Republicans isn’t paying off in any truly beneficial way other than stacking your resumé. However, there are some college consortiums that fulfill every piece of this pop culture pie. Indeed, you can pad your social and professional life through awesome University organizations that increase your legitimacy in the boardroom and on the streets. I’m primarily referring to your campus radio station, KWVA.
There’s no way that this won’t sound like a press release from a desperate PR rep, but there needs to be some serious discussion and recognition about the truly bodacious wonder that is 88.1 FM, KWVA, Eugene. Every time I flip open this equally virtuous publication called the Emerald, there’s a story about a disgruntled senator in the ASUO giving KWVA crap for something frivolous. KWVA is a 24-hour, 365-day operation whose only purpose is to serve students and the Eugene community with badass music, independent news, concerts, parties, live amphitheater and lawn performances, and now, a cherry on top: KWVA’s 1st Annual Record Swap.
This might be the best University community event KWVA has put on yet, because, as we’ve previously established, music is one of the cornerstones of pop culture, and a record swap gives you the opportunity to see campus’ most legit group in action. Live deejays, cheap as dirt CDs, vinyl, cassettes and more, not to mention the opportunity to get involved with the station. And since tomorrow’s an away game, and you’ve got nothing else to do on a Saturday, why not check it out? It’s a mere $3-$5 for an all-day extravaganza in the EMU’s Fir Room, and all the money raised goes to expanding KWVA’s already proven foundation.
By the way, have you seen the campus station? If you have, then you’ll know it’s slightly smaller in size than a library bathroom. But instead of bowel movements, you’ve got up to eight people, thousands of CDs, and barely enough room to stretch your legs. The Record Swap hopes to make room for even more music, and get this, enough space to allow for live musical performances.
So if you’re sick of campus groups just running away with your money (Cultural Forum), your time (OSPIRG), or your self-respect (College Republicans), then help out one of the best University-funded groups. As Damien blurted in Mean Girls, “You can’t join Mathletes! It’s social suicide!” Well friends, I’m telling you that joining the KWVA militia – either as a volunteer or simply as an avid supporter – is not social suicide, but a social apex.
