What’s known about the universe may have changed since students took high school astronomy.
Susan Peterson, the planetarium director at the Science Factory, will talk about new discoveries made about space since 1957 tonight at 7 p.m. at Luna, located at 30 E. Broadway in Eugene.
Her presentation, titled “From Sputnik to Spirit: What We’ve Learned About Our Solar System,” is part of the Science Pub series, a partnership between the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the University and the Science Factory.
“The body of knowledge on the universe is always expanding, so it’s important people continue to be educated,” said Joyce Berman, executive director of the Science Factory.
Peterson has published more than 80 journal articles on astronomy, Berman said. Peterson has worked at the Mayborn Planetarium and Space Theater in Texas, the Casper, Wyo., Planetarium and the Kansas City, Mo., Museum Planetarium.
Science Pub, started by OMSI in Portland, first came to Eugene in June, said Sara Mason, director of development for the natural sciences at the College of Arts and Sciences.
“We want to educate the community about things happening in the sciences,” Mason said. “It’s a very comfortable, relaxing atmosphere where people can relax and ask questions.”
