Halloween is a holiday for the kids, with costume, face paint and parties that tend to foster a higher than average level of mirth, even for college students.
But if you’re not much the partying type, or if you’d rather party at an establishment that supports your booze tendencies, you may not know where to turn for an exciting time come Halloween night.
For those old enough to frequent Eugene’s bars, the opportunities to get down in costume are almost unlimited, with many local hangouts putting on events both on the weekend preceding Halloween and on the big night itself.
Sam Bond’s Garage will host Eleven Eyes on Wednesday, accompanied by the Turntable Enabler. Eleven Eyes, based in Eugene, brings a danceable blend of jazz and funk with some electronic elements, which ought to keep everyone’s body moving.
The Sam Bond’s Garage Halloween party should make for a great showcase of local music, and a great place to spend an energetic Wednesday evening.
John Henry’s will celebrate the holiday all weekend with shows Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. Friday, John Henry’s is having a hip-hop Halloween party with performances from local talent. Saturday, 1980s cover bands will provide the tunes for an ’80s-themed bash, and Sunday brings the Halloween edition of John Henry’s Broadway Revue, the bar’s weekly burlesque show.
On Halloween night, John Henry’s plays host to Night of the Living Dread, John Henry’s Wednesday night hip-hop versus reggae DJ night with a Halloween spin.
Those of us who cannot get out to bar-sponsored events need look no further than the McDonald Theatre and the WOW Hall, which both have popular acts booked for the holiday.
The McDonald Theatre will put on a Halloween masquerade, featuring Reeble Jar for the night’s entertainment. Eugene-based and locally favored, Reeble Jaroffers the funky, jam band tunes for which it has made a name for themselves, and should give concertgoers ample opportunity to spend the night sweating.
The WOW Hall happens to have one of its bigger indie names of the term in town on Halloween night, when Australia’s Architecture in Helsinki will treat patrons to an evening of indie pop played by an impressively large band. The show should provide just what the doctor ordered for pop fans who feel that life is scary enough without the zombies and ghosts that accompany Halloween.
All in all, Halloween ought to be a great night out, whether you choose to spend it in the bars, in the venues or on the streets waiting for the crowds to come out.
