I am writing with regards to the U.S. Army ROTC ad that ran in the Friday, Jan. 20 edition of the Emerald. To me, by running this ad, a number of things are being told to me as a reader: First, that your paper endorses the U.S. Army and all its policies. Secondly, the likelihood of stories published criticizing the U.S. Army and their policies is very, very slim – if at all. Finally, any stories about the U.S. Army that happen to be published in the Emerald are influenced by these U.S. Army ROTC ads you carry.
To me, it would be much better if you were to run ads that provide a positive contribution to our society. Considering that a part of my student fees goes toward this newspaper, I demand this.
Do not take whatever money comes your way to sustain your paper financially. I’d much rather see a smaller daily edition of the Emerald than any with an ad from the U.S. Army ROTC.
