Backup goalkeeper Emily Zaler will not be back in an Oregon uniform next season.
Zaler, who will be a sophomore in the fall, is transferring to Missouri in search of more playing time.
Jessie Chatfield, the Ducks’ starting goalkeeper, is only a year ahead of Zaler in eligibility and has had a lock on the goalkeeping position for the past two seasons.
Tori Johnson, a goalkeeper from Corvallis High School, will also join the Ducks as a freshman next season.
“It’s something that’s happened over the course of the spring; we have another goalkeeper coming in, we talked with Emily, and she decided it’d be in her best interests to get more playing time,” Oregon soccer coach Tara Erickson said.
Erickson said she assisted Zaler in finding her new team. Zaler distinguished herself when she was pressed into action after the Ducks’ starting goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield broke her hand in first half of the season.
The Ducks went 4-1 with Zaler between the posts. In five matches, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native made 15 saves and garnered Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week honors.
“Emily did some great things for us when she was here,” Erickson said. “She stepped in, in some big moments for us. We owe her and I’d love to see her have the opportunity to compete for a starting spot. We wish her the best of luck.”
Oregon has added another two players to its roster.
Jessica Goodell, a midfielder/forward, will transfer to Oregon from Nebraska. Goodell, who will be a junior in the fall, played in 41 games in her two seasons with the Cornhuskers.
Midfielder Mackenzie Doty will also join the team next season. Doty, a McMinnville High School graduate, registered four goals and one assist in the 20 games she played for Chico State last season.
Doty enrolled at Oregon for winter quarter and earned a roster spot as a walk-on during the Ducks’ recently completed spring season.
