Don’t forget Symantec
This is in reference to Ben Romano’s Article “E-mail Virus’ global ruin delivers all but Love” (ODE, May 5). It had a side bar with some quick information on the viruses and included the closing statement “Where to get help if you have contracted the Love Bug: www.mcafee.com.” I have to consider this irresponsible journalism on a couple of counts.
First off, this is plain favoritism. There are a number of virus software packages on the market, and the Emerald seems to be promoting one above the rest — but that belongs on the editorial page and not on the front page.
Second, students can receive the Duck Web CD, which includes Norton AntiVirus as part of the University’s site license. If they have Norton installed, then they just have to go to www.SARC.com to down load the virus protection for the love bug that Symantec had posted within hours of the first incident of the virus. Going to Mcafee.com is only useful if you have their software program installed already. The article may lead students to think that the Norton Antivirus is useless for the Love Bug and that they need to go out and purchase Mcafee instead.
And thirdly, Symantec is a major local employer in Eugene and has contributed a lot to the University — surely the Emerald could include its name among the options for those with a virus on their system.

Please forgive us
The University Day Committee would like to apologize for our advertisement that ran in the Emerald on May 9. We realize the advertisement was in poor taste, and we apologize for our unintentional insensitivity. We hope this incident will not deter any of you in supporting and volunteering at our 2000 University Day.

Bettman works for us all
I’d like to encourage people to vote for Bonny Bettman this week. I’m the owner of a small business located in downtown Eugene, and I think she’ll do a great job at helping the City Council find a way to bring life back to the core of our city. It’s about time that we finally have a chance to vote for someone who includes all the citizens in her thoughts and ideas, rather than just doing the grunt work for the local rich and powerful.
How do I know she plans to work for all of us? The fact that she has already spent more than 10 years working on various city committees and commissions was my first clue. If you’ve ever spent time on one of these committees, you know it’s not much fun. Bettman didn’t spend those hours to make herself rich or because it was exciting. She did it to help out. She did it without expecting any praise or gratitude.
Beyond that, however, her obvious concerns about livable neighborhoods, citizen participation in government and a local sustainable economy demonstrate a clear desire to help us all by working to create a beautiful city fueled by jobs that will be here long after the foreign multinational leaves for better tax-break pastures. We need more leaders like that. We need Bettman on the City Council!

Olsen rounds out race
Ward 3 voters should elect Tracy Olsen for City Council. He is the complete package that we need to lead the future of the downtown and the university districts.
Why is Olsen the complete package? He’s a native of Eugene, having attended all of the years of his education, from grade school through college, in Ward 3. He owns a small business in Ward 3 and understands the challenges and opportunities facing Eugene’s commerce and financial stability. He’s in tune with the environment and wants to ensure that Eugene is a naturally healthy place for all of us to live and work. He’s very involved in community service and has worked for children’s charities, causes and events. He’s also positive and energetic and has the pleasing and friendly personality that will be a real benefit for everyone living in his Ward.
It is clear that other candidates in this race only have a part of the package. They are limited in their willingness to listen to all sides of an issue and limited in the real experience it will take to make informed decisions. Why should we be willing to settle for less when we have a solid, complete candidate in Olsen? That’s part of the reason The Register-Guard has endorsed Olsen in this race.
Vote for Olsen. He’s got everything we need.

New, fair leadership with Olsen
Voters in Eugene’s Ward 3 can vote to bring a healthy balance to the City Council.
Tracy Olsen is the person we should elect.
Like any form of government, a healthy set of checks and balances is beneficial to insure that all views are heard and represented. As The Register-Guard pointed out in its endorsement of Olsen, he is the candidate who brings a new, energetic and moderate point of view to the mix. Why should we elect another councilor with a set agenda that will only serve the far left? Why shouldn’t we elect a councilor like Olsen who will listen to all points of view before making an informed decision?
I urge all Ward 3 voters to join The Register-Guard and many of your neighbors in supporting Olsen for the Eugene City Council. He will be good for our kids, our neighborhoods, our environment, our business and anyone else who wants a fair shake with city government.
It’s time for new leadership. It’s time for positive government. It’s time for Olsen.

Make your voice heard
By now, students should have received their primary ballots. Vote! This is not just a primary, deciding who will be on the ballot in the November general election — for many local races, this is the election. Your city councilor will be elected on this ballot.
Bobby Lee, who represented students well, is not running for re-election. Students need to make sure their voice is heard in choosing his replacement. How can you expect your councilor to demand that the city take students’ views into account if you are unwilling to take part in the process?
The City Council wards are not huge — your vote will count. With less than a week left, only about 20 percent of the ballots have been returned. Students possess enough votes to decide this election.
You can and should make a difference in this election. Vote to elect Olsen as your Ward 3 councilor. I know Olsen, and he is a solid person who will listen to students. Olsen is endorsed by the Oregon Daily Emerald and The Register-Guard. Olsen has sponsored a student forum on campus to listen to the concerns of students. Olsen employs students on his campaign. The choice is clear — vote for Olsen.
If you don’t vote, then don’t complain when the non-students in your ward elect someone who won’t listen to you.
Remember, if you vote now, you won’t have to protest later.

Olsen gets involved
As Olsen’s campaign is becoming more and more successful, I am more impressed with him as a candidate for Ward 3. Olsen lives downtown. He owns and manages his family business in the heart of Ward 3. He is a University graduate and a dedicated community activist.
Olsen’s range of active involvement with the citizens of the ward speaks highly of his investment in Eugene. He is a member of the Eugene Executives Association. Olsen is a member of the Eugene Active 20/30, benefiting local children’s charity organizations. Olsen is advocating local senior issues. Olsen has worked actively with Ward 3 City Counselor Bob
by Lee and the E
ugene Police Department on neighborhood public safety issues. He has also gone on a police ride-along with Eugene city police officers. He has been walking the ward door-to-door, meeting and talking with residents.
Olsen is a compassionate and efficient businessman with the ability to listen, comprise and make decisions to improve Eugene’s public safety, education and culture in Ward 3.
