I was and ad sales rep during the spring of ’90 and during the schoolyear of ’90-91. I was also in charge of the ‘suicide squad’ who would goat 4 A.M and complete all the inserts for the ODE, only to find them spreadall over campus by 10 A.M.
I am now working for MCI Metro, which is the new local telephone servicedivision within MCI. It is fun and interesting to be able to help starta division from the ground up. I am also completing a Masters of Telecommunications degree at the University of Denver.

September 1989 – June 1991. I was part of the infamous production crewthat brought you such greats as “Bookstore Ads” and “TrackTown Coupons.” There I met the likes of Hon “Travolta,” Mrs.Daller & Mrs. Ross (our fearless leaders) Ingrid the Great, Jenifeer (Princessof the Pan Fl ute) and Slim Jim Finch. The days went by quickly listeningto disco and the Barbarella soundtrack as we furiously pasted up some ofEugene’s finest ads.
Immediately after graduating I took a job with Tektronix as a media assistantin their corporate advertising department. I stayed there for a year thenwent back to school to study graphic design doing freelance work on theside. Currently I’m working as a studio artist at Wieden & Kennedy and stilldoing freelance work for various clients.

I started at the ODE in 1986 as a student ad typesetter. After graduation,I was Production Department Ad Coordinator, 1987-91. After leaving the ODEI worked downtown for Aster Publishing as their Typesetting Department Manager,1991-1994.
We moved to the frozen tundra of Northern Wisconsin in Sept. 1994. Wehave been learning the art of snow shoveling while wearing a cheeseheadand have gone from die-hard Quacker Backers to PACKER Backers. (Convenienton the wardrobe that both teams are y ellow & green!) I am currently perfectingmy skills as full time Mom & Domestic Engineer. Our daughter, Kelli, is2-1/2 and brother Daniel is 5 months. I plan to ease my way back into thework force in a couple more years. I often wonder about all of the ODE peopleI worked with in those years. Also, who was it that was always stealingmy lunch out of the fridge?

I worked as a freelancer from 1990 – 1992, and then was hired as a community reporter from 1993 – 1994. Spent a summer on the copy desk as well. I covered city council, bats, otters and briefly achieved immortality by sending away for, and receiving, an official Spam press kit, complete with recipes and8 x 10 glossies of Spamburgers.
After graduating from Northwestern, I found work at the Wausau DailyHerald in Wisconsin, doing general assignment reporting for the paper’snorthern circulation area. So far, this seems to involve school board, cityand county government, bait shops and writing about the weather, which hasbeen horrid. I think of Oregon’s rainy winters with something very muchlike unbridled lust.

My association with the ODE began when I would bring my lunch up fromthe Interfraternity Council office to harass those advertising types andleave crumbs on their desks. In the Summer of 1978 I was hired as the graphicdesigner for the advertising department and worked in that capacity throughAugust of 1980 when I moved to Portland. It was my responsibility to meetthe always unrealistic deadline requirements of the Mean Old ProductionManager Jerill Nilson. My fondest memories are of EMU Beer Gardens, andODE staffer Karen Hartman and I winning the Best Butt Contest at the Padto the cheers of ODE co-workers.
For most of the past 18 years I have been a freelance graphic design, with three one-year stints at “real” jobs as the art directorof a group of medical publications, art director of an ad agency and creativedirector of an international clothing manufacturing firm based in Seattle. My firm, Jeff Fisher LogoMotives specializes in corporate identity workwhich has wom over 100 international, national and regional honors in recentyears. My work has also been featured in nearly 20 publications in Japan,Korea and the U.S. I am currently the designer for all print materials forthe Seattle Seahawks. Other clients range from one-person businesses andnonprofit organizations to major corporations throughout the U.S.

During the time between 1993-95, I served as the Freelance Minister forEntertainment Affairs….where I hammered out screeds on music, theatreand film… with all the profoundness of a weasel gone weird on laughinggas. I don’t remember much of the ODE experience, other than parading aroundthe office on Halloween, dressed as Richard Nixon….and having to savagethe occasional staff member over negligent editing practices. On one particularinfamous occasion, I was running for student body president on
Currently, I ply my trade as a travel columnist for America Online, whereI continue to scribble abortive attempts at serious journalism. I also serveas a hired gun for NIKE and Hewlett Packard whenever I need income to supportmy lifestyle. When I’m not attempting to pay the bills, I play hooky onthe Internet, tend to my infant iguanas and harass the local wildlife.

When that went south, I switched to working inthe technology trade press, doing stints at Internet World, and freelancingfor Wired Magazine, Wired News online, and Columbia Journalism Review amongothers. Since late 1998, I’ve been Senior Editor for Computers andCommunications at Electronic News (www.electronicnews.com), part of theCahners Business Information group. Other than desperatley missing Track Town Pizza, passable Mexican food, 18th St. Cafe and Pre’s Trail, I love New York.

I couldn’t decide how much time would need to pass before it would be “appropriate” to post on this board, but the Emerald’s 100th birthday (Feb. 12, 2000) seems like a good time.
I was editor in chief (1997-98), copy chief (winter/spring 1997, fall1998) and copy editor (fall 1996). I also worked on the alumni databasefor a short time, edited the “ODE to a Century” section and wrote my honors college thesis about women’s experiences at the ODE during the 1940s and 1950s.
Nowadays, I’m a copy editor for the features department at The BaltimoreSun, technically a two-year intern. Among other duties, I cut thehoroscope, thus drastically affecting our readers’ every move. Gotmarried July 2000 to Judah Kelber, a UO alum who some of you may rememberas the guy who pretended to fire people (usually Doug) the year I waseditor. (Sorry about that, everyone!) We’re living happily in the ‘burbs and trying not to become part of Bawlmer’s murder statistics. (It’s really not as bad as “Homicide” makes it sound.)

I was a higher education reporter beginning the fall of 1996 through winter 1997. After that I was fortunate to get a spot on the sports desk. While a sports staffer I mostly covered women’s track and field along with various other sports. I remember the first week or two in sports I covered Jerry Green leaving UO for Tennessee. That opportunity kind of launched me quickly into sports.
I am a sports reporter at the Daily Sparks Tribune in Sparks, NV. I have been here since shortly after graduation in the spring of 97. Mostly I cover local prep sports but have also covered U of Nevada athletics. I’m looking for something bigger eventually. Being from Oregon originally this is a bit of a change, but it can be a fun place to work. Hopefully I’ll see some of you at the celebration during homecoming in October.
