After two days at the Western Intercollegiate golf tournament in Santa Cruz, Calif., the University men’s golf team is in a tight battle near the top of the 18-team field.
On Sunday, freshman Andrew Vijarro shot 1-over par 71 to help the Ducks into a tie for third place after the first round. Vijarro finished the day tied for ninth place individually, while Oregon tallied a team score of 290 – even with Michigan State and seven points behind Colorado.
Yesterday, Oregon moved up to second place with more strong play from Vijarro. He shot 2-over par to finish in a tie for third place overall, while freshman Robbie Ziegler finished in a tie for fifth. Freshman Eugene Wong rounded out Oregon’s top-10 finishers, placing 10th for the Ducks.
The young Oregon team finished the day in second place overall, only four strokes behind Fresno State. The Ducks will be back in action today as they wrap up the three-day event.
