I’m happy to see that the Daily Emerald is back in production and that it appreciated the Oregon Commentator’s support. However, in the midst of expressing its gratitude, the Friday ODE editorial (“Emerald humbled by support, looking forward,” ODE, March 6) stated that the Commentator blog “attempts to justify date rape.” This is simply not true.
The fundamental idea underlying the Commentator’s philosophy is that all people are first and foremost individuals who should be allowed to live their lives as they see fit, free from mental or physical coercion. There is no justifying or excusing rape.
The point of the blog post in question was that there should be a greater emphasis in educating people how to “prevent” sexual assault. Rather than arguing, though, I thought I’d own up to this claim and offer students some practical tips:
By making smart choices, you can drastically improve your safety. Getting blackout drunk isn’t safe. You’re not able to defend yourself. You’re not even aware of your surroundings.
Also, rather than walking home late at night or crashing at a strange place, students can get a free ride from the Designated Driver Shuttle or the Assault Prevention Shuttle by calling (541) 346-RIDE.
Finally, it’s not a bad idea to carry protection, such as pepper spray or (and here I go being “incendiary” again) a gun. Tasers are fairly useless, and self-protection classes are good for situational awareness but shouldn’t be relied upon alone. Weapons are an equalizing force, and frankly, women are perfectly justified in shooting an attacker.
