In snow flurries and 30-degree temperatures, Oregon beat Denver 11-9 on Saturday for the first win over the Pioneers in program history.
It took Oregon until its seventh try to beat DU, which hadn’t lost a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game since April 15, 2006.
The Ducks (9-3, 3-1 MPSF) got five points from sophomore Alex Breiner while freshman Catherine Davidson scored three goals and the game-winning goal.
After Denver (8-5, 2-1) scored quickly in the game’s first two minutes, the Ducks ran off five straight goals, two of which were by Breiner, who finished with four goals.
The teams were tied 6-6 at the half as Denver outshot the Ducks 16-13 in the first half as Oregon committed 11 turnovers, four more than the home team. Oregon turned the ball over 14 times in the second half as well, 12 more than the Pioneers for the game, but were able to stay ahead as Denver managed only one save in the second half.
The Ducks scored five of the half’s first six goals, giving them a 11-7 cushion. Davidson scored goals with 10:51 and 9:02 to go in the game to finish the Ducks’ scoring.
Denver responded with two goals by Ali Flury, who finished with four, but couldn’t cut the lead all the way.
