The University Club Sports executive committee decided Monday to uphold its cancellation of the men’s club ultimate frisbee season after 80 minutes of discussion. Team officials said they plan to appeal to a higher governing body at the University, of which in particular they were unsure of Monday night.
Committee member Tina Snodgrass’s motion to overturn last Friday’s decision, consider alternative punishments and allow the team to play in this weekend’s regional tournament in Corvallis was not seconded and died.
More than 110 people attended the meeting.
The team, ranked third in the nation, presented letters from other ultimate clubs from around the nation in its defense as well as apologies and support from team members and its chaperone for the trip to Oregon State on April 11, where some members of the team played nude for a point in an intrasquad game in the sectional tournament. ASUO President Sam Dotters-Katz, a member of the team his first term of his freshman year, was one of 10 audience members to argue for the committee to reconsider. Five spoke in support of the committee’s previous decision.
Team co-captain Steve Kenton proposed alternative punishments such as sitting the players involved for the first game of the regionals, having players do 10 hours of community service and holding community ultimate frisbee clinics.
“We think we can appeal, and we’re going to do everything we can from there,” team co-coordinator Cody Bjorklund said. “Ultimately, we just want to play.”
