Options for another appeal by the men’s Ultimate Frisbee club team to overturn the Club Sports executive committee’s decision to cancel its season appear to be shrinking.
Team co-captain Steve Kenton, player Joe Condon and ‘A’ coach Jay Janin met with Club Sports Director Sandy Vaughn and EMU Director of Student Activities Gregg Lobisser Tuesday for 20 minutes to discuss a further appeal.
Lobisser, according to Kenton, was the next person in the hierarchy above the executive committee because Club Sports uses space in the EMU.
The team representatives were told by Lobisser that he would not further their appeal.
“He kind of told us that outside of legal action he can’t help us,” Kenton said. “He said if we wanted to take a more lawful approach, that he would not be the guy to talk to. At that point I kind of decided that I was done. He was kind of the last ditch, as far as I’m concerned.”
Kenton said he knows a small group of team members are still trying to find an avenue to appeal through, but could not name anyone who is still trying.
Co-captain Dusty Becker deferred comment to Kenton.
“It shows that the EMU administration supported the committee’s decision and found our ruling valuable,” said Jeff Gibb, chairman of the executive committee.
Executive committee member and student Senator Tina Snodgrass, whose motion for the committee’s ruling to be overturned died Monday night, spent a few hours Tuesday trying to discuss options with the team, she said.
Taking the case to the Senate could yield a resolution, Snodgrass said, but a resolution itself could not overturn a decision unless the University administration stepped in.
“(Resolutions) take the point of view of the Senate,” Snodgrass said. “It doesn’t really go anywhere unless they take it to the administration.”
Senate will meet tonight at 7 p.m.
Kenton said that personally, he did not want to take further action because he did not want to further hurt the relationship next year’s Ultimate team would have with Club Sports.
“I’d like them to come back and have a good standing with Club Sports (next year),” Snodgrass said.
