After 90 minutes of deliberation Tuesday evening, the Oregon Daily Emerald’s Board of Directors chose Allie Grasgreen as next year’s editor-in-chief.
Grasgreen is currently the newspaper’s managing editor. Photo editor Dave Martinez and former crime and safety reporter Jill Kimball were also candidates for the position.
Emerald Board Member Jeanne Long said that the decision was unanimous and it was clear Grasgreen was the best candidate for the position.
“She already has a working knowledge of the newsroom and understands the financial situation,” Long said. “She also understands the importance of moving the Emerald online and had amazing letters of recommendation. We are very happy with our decision.”
Grasgreen will begin editor training May 1 and will officially become editor in chief June 1.
Grasgreen started at the Emerald as a higher education reporter during her freshman year. She served as freelance editor during spring term of her sophomore year, and managing editor during her junior year, 2008-09.
“I have become extremely devoted to the Emerald,” Grasgreen said. “Working this year with (editor-in-chief) Ashley (Chase) has shown me how rewarding this job can be. My biggest goal is to really complete our online presence next year and focus on Web sites and blogs.”
Grasgreen said working with good friends is one of the best parts of her job. “I work with so many talented and kind people who share the same goals for the Emerald and for student journalism,” she said. “Working with them is what makes it all worth it.”
