Portland City Commissioner Randy Leonard met with Jan Oliver, University advancement representative in Portland, Tuesday afternoon to further discuss wording for the White Stag sign, located atop the University’s Portland satellite building.
The meeting was productive, said Leonard’s spokesman Ty Kovach, but more discussion will be needed in a series of future meetings.
Kovach said the University administration still wants the sign to say “University of Oregon.” Leonard has proposed a set of counter-options, none of which contain the words “University of,” Kovach said.
Representatives from Ramsay Signs, which owns the sign, were also present. Kovach said they were mainly concerned about their financial interests and not the wording on the sign.
Leonard’s goal is to keep the sign a “neutral, Portland-centric icon,” Kovach said.
The next meeting will be this morning, when the Portland City Council will vote on whether to pass an ordinance to condemn the sign.
