Fern Ridge will host Club sailing regatta
The UO sailing team will host the co-ed qualifiers for the Northwest district, April 12-13 at Fern Ridge Reservoir west of Eugene.
The top two teams from this weekend’s races will compete in the Western semi-finals in Boston, Mass. on May 2-3. The regatta will feature teams from around the Northwest, including Oregon State University, Western Washington University, University of Washington, Washington State University, Lewis and Clark and Portland State University.
“We have pretty high expectations,” sophomore Cara Kuhlman said.
The Ducks are ranked second in the Northwest Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association, behind Western Washington. Because the co-ed qualifiers is a varsity event, only four members from the UO Club Sailing team will compete this weekend, using one boat. The teams will compete in at least 12 races throughout the weekend, but will try to complete as many races as possible, weather-permitting.
Teams are scheduled to arrive Saturday at 9 a.m. and the first race should begin by 10 a.m. Races should end between 4 and 5 p.m. The regatta continues all day Sunday.
The co-ed qualifier will all but conclude what has been a busy spring for the team, which has included a trip to Annapolis, Md., training at the Naval Academy and team training with Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The team has also competed in regattas in San Francisco, Calif., and Bellingham, Wash.
Club baseball takes to Civic to face Seattle U.
UO club baseball will look to improve upon its 13-3 record this weekend in a three-game home series against league foe Seattle University Redhawks. The series begins with a double-header Saturday at Civic Stadium slated to begin at noon. The final game of the series begins at noon Sunday. The Ducks (13-3, 3-0) are tied for first place in the Northern Pacific Region with Western Washington University.
The Ducks can also be seen in action the following weekend at South Eugene High School in their final home-stand of the season. The University wraps up the regular season with an away series at Eastern Washington University and will then travel to La Grande for the regional tournament on May 7-9, where the team will look to qualify for its sixth consecutive trip to the National Club Baseball Association World Series. After losing to University of North Carolina in the NCBA Championship Game two years ago and placing third last season, the Ducks are determined to go further.
“We’re definitely trying to win a national championship,” said junior catcher Geb Bumpus.
Other happenings
Other UO club teams in action this weekend include the badminton team, which is hosting a tournament in the Gerlinger Annex, open to all who would like to compete; women’s club soccer, which hosts Oregon State University on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the turf fields; and women’s ultimate frisbee, which will compete in sectionals at Riverfront Field on Saturday and Sunday.
