Polls opened for ASUO elections Monday. Campus was filled with swarms of candidates and their supporters in colored shirts asking for your vote. One campaign stood out to me as I walked through campus.
Emma and Getachew were not just asking for votes; instead, they were actively working for the support of students. They’re not just discussing lower tuition and
fees – they are already working to implement these changes.
Given the state’s fiscal crisis, we need an ASUO executive who will work to save students money. The amount of money allotted for higher education in next year’s state budget will directly impact the resources we have on campus and the amount students pay for tuition.
By having students fill out cards urging our elected representatives to prioritize higher education, Emma and Getachew showed their understanding of the importance of the student voice. They understand what their roles as student leaders need to be. By already advocating for students at the state level, they are truly prioritizing our concerns.
Join me in choosing the candidates who are doing things differently this year. Emma and Getachew are running without a slate – showing a true commitment to being accountable to students rather than political allies. Most importantly, they’re already doing what they say they will do: they are prioritizing student concerns and working actively to respond
to them.
