Picking up the April 3 edition of the Daily Emerald, I was horrified and disappointed to see a gay-hate remark in your opinion column (“Rendering Universities Obsolete,” ODE, April 3). In the first paragraph Edwards states, “I didn’t even have to finish the tour before I knew I wanted to call myself a Bear (not the assless-leather-chap-wearing kind).”
I thought that the Emerald reflected and represented its queer student body as well as the rest, but the fact that your staff would publish a “joke” that furthers stereotypes and hatred toward my community deeply disappoints me. I expected more from an independent paper.
