The ASUO Elections Board will remove presidential candidate Michelle Haley and her running mate Ted Sebastian from its general election ballot Wednesday after ruling that Oregon Action Team bribed volunteers by distributing alcohol to minors.
The elections board wrote in its ruling that Haley and Sebastian had known about the distribution.
The ruling is on a grievance filed by True Blue Student Coalition supporter David Griffin, who wrote in the grievance that he would bring an anonymous student to testify before the elections board about the charge.
When asked about the grievance before the ruling, Haley categorically denied the charge. “Literally, bottles of alcohol could be purchased anywhere and stickers could be affixed to them,” Haley said. “We did not in any way authorize or spend campaign dollars or endorse buying alcohol for minors. Or for anyone, for that matter.”
Haley’s campaign subsequently released a statement threatening libel suits against Griffin and two other opponents.
However, the elections board’s ruling disputed Haley’s claims. “Evidence provided has shown that the Presidential Candidate for the (Oregon Action Team) was aware that said party was going to take place and that some members of the … campaign would be putting stickers on items to be handed out at said party,” it read.
