Matthew Centrowitz’s biggest competition in the Cardinal Invitational 1,500 meters may have come from his own father.
Centrowitz won the race in 3:36.92, the sixth-fastest time in NCAA history and the third-best time in school history. The Arnold, Md., native is surpassed on the school list only by Olympic gold medalist Joaquim Cruz (3:36.48, set in 1984) and his father, Matt (3:36.7, set in 1976).
Steeplechaser Chris Winter finished 13th in his final Saturday, but his personal-best time of 8:42.03 currently stands as the fastest mark by a Pacific-10 Conference runner. Winter was third among collegiate runners in the steeplechase, bested only by Jake Morse of Texas and Kyle Perry of BYU.
Senior Galen Rupp added another NCAA West Regional qualifying mark to his growing collection by taking fifth place in the 800m Saturday, first among collegians. Rupp finished in 1:50.00, an unusually fast time for an elite long-distance runner.
Junior Zoe Buckman finished fifth in the women’s 800m in 2:05.21, second among collegians. Her time is the best by a Pac-10 athlete this season.
