Former Oregon basketball player Ben Voogd, a Florence native, signed with Northwest Christian University on Tuesday to play basketball for the Beacons in 2009-10.
NCU plays in the Cascade Collegiate Conference of the NAIA, and Voogd will have one year to play after playing at Oregon for nearly a year and a half after playing at Louisiana State for two seasons. His freshman year, the point guard helped the Tigers make the NCAA Final Four.
“I wanted to go somewhere that I knew I could play,” Voogd said in a release. “This is a place where I already know a lot of the players from growing up in the area and I have known most of the coaching staff for a while, as well. I’ll be able to play my style of basketball here under a coaching staff that has been here for a long time and understands the game and will give me the opportunity to play.”
Head coach Dave Lipp was excited to have a talented player added to his roster.
“Ben has been a D-I player, playing in the Final Four, and bringing in someone of his caliber brings us some added credibility and helps exponentially with our other recruiting efforts for next season,” Lipp said. “He will make us better instantly and he is the type of guy that makes everyone on the floor get better.”
