Assistant professor John Arndt and product design students Lloyd Furey, Tyler Grossman and Brittney Rekate carry planks cut from a tree donated to the product design department. Steve Mital, director of the university’s Office of Sustainability, has sponsored the milling of the tree for use in a furniture workshop class. Students in the class will be designing furniture for placement in Johnson Hall. The product design students attending the milling appreciated the opportunity to see the process for wood they use for their projects. “It is all being donated, so it is all free materials for us,” said Grossman. Old urban trees like this one are normally turned into firewood. Arndt said he is happy to see the local materials being used for something that will be seen on campus.
