In response to Dan Lawton’s criticism of a ‘left-leaning’ faculty (“A Vast Disparity,” ODE, 6/1/09), Tim Gleason, dean of the University’s School of Journalism and Communication, assures us that those criticisms “were … fully investigated and appropriate action was taken.”
Question: In that neither Lawton nor Gleason identified the professors who attacked Lawton for his column in the Emerald, why doesn’t the dean specify the “appropriate action”? Does even Lawton know? How does the reader know that any action was taken?
In all of this exchange, neither the readers nor the students are really taught anything about open and honest investigation and reporting. If anything, we’re taught the opposite.
