As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but the online staff must be able to work an average of 30 hours per week. The online staff is expected to work with members of the newsroom to plan, coordinate and ensure proper editorial coverage on the newspaper’s Web site. The online staff is specifically responsible for:
- Decisions regarding the visual design of the online edition. The online editor will consult with the editor in chief regarding design and will work with the advertising director to accommodate advertising in the design
- Determining, by working with other desk editors, how supplementary coverage will be created, organized and updated on the Web site
- Working with editor in chief to ensure that all new media tools are being used cohesively
- Work as part of a team responsible for posting each issue online by 8 a.m.
- Work as part of team responsible for creating and posting at least two multimedia slideshows, two videos and four Podcasts online each week
- Working as part of a team to ensure there is at least one person from the online desk attends the 3:30 budget meetings
- Overseeing any web producers or reporters to generate coverage and improve news Web site presence
- Coordinate with the multimedia editor for coverage
- Editorial decisions, including decisions (in consultation with the editor in chief) as to what gets published on the Web site
- Checking news links daily to make sure that all are functional
- Knowing how to transfer InDesign documents to the online edition
- Posting breaking news stories and extra content packages
- Working to develop new site features
- Monitoring the Internet for media trends online Keeping regular office hours
- Attending required staff meetings
- Monitoring the news daily to keep abreast of all issues that need to be covered, and see that no pertinent news is missed
- Setting individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
