While students were away, business as usual continued at the University’s many departments. Here are some of the highlights.
School of Architecture and Allied Arts
This will be the second year for the AAA school’s new Product Design program, which was started last year through Campaign Oregon donations.
The program, which combines course elements from art and interior architecture, as well as business and even anthropology, focuses on designing products for consumer use.
“It takes the artistic discipline and puts it into a practical framework,” said Kayla Hinds, administrative assistant for the program.
The program is also supported by several companies, such as Columbia Sportswear, Ziba Design and Nike. Hinds said that this fall, two Nike designers will work with students in the studio classes.
This summer, product design student Jessica Richards won $2,000 in a contest for designing an improved microphone for the Rock Band video game.
College of Education
This will be the first year students at the College of Education spend in the newly renovated Lorry I. Lokey Education and HEDCO Education buildings. Education Dean Mike Bullis said the buildings are “98-percent there.”
The College of Education’s was also recently ranked the fourth-best graduate education program in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, the highest at any public university.
Bullis said the college’s high performance happened because it “engages in research and outreach to the community in an unprecedented way.”
Bullis said College of Education students and faculty receive more than $100 million a year in scholarships and grants.
Graduate School
The Graduate School announced its annual awards for graduate teaching fellows.
Chu-Jui “Betty” Chen, a doctoral student in human physiology, and Sean Laurent, a doctoral student in physiology, received the Donald and Darel Stein Graduate Student Teaching Award, which recognizes “outstanding teaching performances by experienced GTFs who have demonstrated a commitment to developing their instructional skills, while at the same time excelling in their academic degree program.”
The Dan Kimble First Year Teaching Award, which recognizes “outstanding teaching performances by GTFs who have completed their fist year,” was awarded to Catherine Liggett, a German master’s student, and Audrey Medina, a doctoral student in counseling psychology.
Law School
This summer, Adell Amos, law school faculty member and alumna, was appointed to the Obama administration as Deputy Solicitor for Land and Water Resources at the Department of the Interior.
Amos is a noted scholar in environmental law, particularly water rights. She previously worked with the Department of the Interior before joining the faculty at the law school.
College of Arts and Sciences
The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences is optimistic about the coming year, despite the economic downturn. Dean Scott Coltrane announced in an article for the college’s publication Cascade that “the UO is actually in a better position than many public universities across the country — precisely because the state of Oregon has been disinvesting in higher education for so long.”
School of Music and Dance
According to information from the School of Music and Dance, there was “no news” over the summer.
As of press time, the College of Business and the School of Journalism and Communication could not be reached for comment.
