Former collegiate quarterback and NFL safety Scott Frost has been hired to coach Oregon’s wide receivers effective immediately.
The hire fills the spot left by Robin Pflugrad, who was told in December that he would not have a spot on the Oregon coaching staff when head coach in-waiting Chip Kelly takes over, possibly earlier should Bellotti stay.
Frost’s experience is varied, if not full of coaching wide receivers.
Frost, 34, spent the last two seasons coaching defense at Northern Iowa, where he spent last season as the co-defensive coordinator.
He made his mark on the college game as a player in the mid-1990s, when he transferred from Stanford to Nebraska in 1995, and led the Tom Osborne-coached Cornhuskers to a national championship in 1997, when the team went a perfect 13-0.
As a quarterback he was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Award for the top senior quarterback in the nation after passing and running for 1,000 yards in his senior season, only the 10th player to do so.
Frost went to the NFL and played six years as a safety. He became a graduate assistant coach at Nebraska in 2002 and then Kansas State in 2006 before going to Northern Iowa in 2007 as a linebackers coach.
As co-defensive coordinator, the team led the Football Bowl Subdivision with 40 takeaways on the season, and allowed 17.7 points per game, ninth-best in the country.
According to a release by the University, Frost and Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti showed their satisfaction with the hire.
“Scott was one of the most impressive young men I have ever had the opportunity to interview,”Bellotti said in the release.
Frost said he working with Kelly and Bellotti on offense was what sold him.
“They have some unique things to offer and the ability to attract some of the best athletes in the country,” Frost said. “I feel the offense at Oregon is the best in the country and their potential to what they can accomplish is unlimited.”
The hire leaves one coaching spot left to fill for Oregon, that of the defensive line.
