Ferocious lightning on an open sea, the flickering static of TV screens and a bald dictator cheered on by a barbaric crowd as he gives a thumbs down to a naked woman, who is escorted away by two masked soldiers.
What does this urban mess sound like? ROAR!!! At least that’s all we can make out of it. We can’t quite tell whether there are actually lyrics or not, but either way, it is pure energy and pure dissonance.
The music video for “Nothing Left,” by San Diego thrash metal band As I Lay Dying, begins with an ominous drone that lets you know something wicked is about to unleash. After a thundering pulse that forces your head up and down, the music quickly takes off with a relentless double-bass and impossible guitar shredding that leaves no space between individual notes.
It’s actually quite easy on the ear for a death metal band, and the chorus even mellows out to a pleasant melody, downgraded from growling to singing. Since 2001, the quintet has shined for its technical prowess everywhere from MTV2’S Headbanger’s Ball to Ozzfest 2005. As I Lay Dying will thrash the WOW Hall on Sunday, Jan. 18, with Protest the Hero, The Human Abstract and My Children My Bride. Tickets are $16 in advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.
