Attaining popularity by word of mouth, O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) went from an unknown college rock band playing Ohio State University’s fraternities to attracting the eager eyes of MTV and others.
Founded in 1996, the five-piece group primarily from Rockville, Md., plays a versatile set of easy-going alternative rock and reggae music spiced up with a saxophone. Several guitar players, harmonized voices and uplifting lyrics create vibes reminiscent of Pearl Jam and the Dave Matthews Band.
Having traveled the country for nearly a decade, O.A.R.’s co-founder and lyricist Marc Roberge headed to the highways again with his wife and dogs. He found no better way to prepared for the band’s new album, “All Sides,” than to drive from New York to the recording studio in Los Angeles.
“It was a completely different view of America than from a tour bus,” Roberge wrote on the band’s Web site. “You see so much more when you are in the driver’s seat.” Last year, the band found itself even farther from its hometown when it set off to tour Kuwait and Iraq.
O.A.R. will perform at the McDonald Theatre on Friday, Jan. 16. Tickets are $22.50 in advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.
