The No. 3 men’s golf team got off to a slow start in the opening round of the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic on Monday, sitting in seventh place overall.
The Ducks shot a 369 (14-over par) as a team, and stood 14 shots behind the leader (No. 43 Pepperdine).
Sophomore Daniel Miernicki led the way for Oregon, shooting a 72 (1-over par) and tying for 16th individually. Not far behind was sophomore Andrew Vijarro, who shot a 73 (2-over par) and currently stands tied for 24th place. Sophomore Eugene Wong and junior Jack Dukeminier, meanwhile, finished the first day 3-over par and tied for 34th.
Carl Smith IV of Pepperdine shot a 67 (4-under par) in the first round, and currently leads the individual category. Alton Anderson of Brigham Young, Richard Lee of No. 6 Washington, and Eric Mina of No. 21 California are all tied for second at three-under par.
Oregon stands as the highest ranked team in the tournament. Also participating are No. 24 San Diego, No. 41 Fresno State and No. 45 Michigan.
Second round play also took place on Monday afternoon, and the final round will be played today.
