This is in response to Travis Bott’s letter (“‘Tangible benefits’ are superficial appeals,” ODE, April 6) concerning Reality Check’s parking plan. Bott states, “Tell the administration we don’t accept the paving of our green spaces for parking lots …” and argues that Reality Check does not value environmental sustainability because of our parking plan.
Reality Check plans to open Autzen Stadium to student parking. This would have two advantages: First, is would allow commuter students from all over Lane County a safe, accessible place to access campus. Secondly, it would actually promote sustainability. The University campus plan in accordance to local and state planning requirements must designate a certain number of parking spaces on campus.
Increasing parking at Autzen will allow for more actual green open space near campus. The majority of students who live within a 2-mile radius of campus will find it more convenient to walk, bike or ride the bus. This plan would simply allow non-traditional commuter students a way to easily access campus.
We agree with Bott that paving over green space is not in the best interest of students, which is why we should fully utilize existing parking spaces on campus.
Alex McCafferty has a consistent record of supporting sustainability, which is evidenced by his Senate voting supporting preserving the Riverfront Research Park as a green space.
