Whether your Valentine’s Day plans are postponed or your significant other is out of state, Valentine’s Day will reach students far and wide. While some couples use the day to recognize the ones they love, others prefer to do nothing at all. Despite disagreements, distance and differences, these couples seem to make this day commemorating love fit their relationships. So, even if they can’t take a romantic trip to Paris or the Bahamas, local couples still plan to do what they can to make the most of this special holiday.
Michelle Bagoyo and Nickolaus Sugai
Q: How Long have you guys been together?
A: Michelle: 2 1/2 years
Q: If you could do anything on Valentine’s Day, what would it be?
A: Michelle: Rent a car and get out of town! I would love to spend Valentine’s Day in Portland or Seattle; a bigger city where there are tons more to do.
Nickolaus: Take a day trip somewhere, explore, get into trouble, eat, drink, be merry.
Q: Have you always liked Valentine’s Day?
A: Michelle: Yes, I’ve always celebrated this day, regardless of whether or not I was single or taken. I have the most amazing memories of V-day while being in a couple of relationships. I also remember a bunch of “singles’ night out” events while I was not in
a relationship.
Nickolaus: I think I am in the minority as far as males liking Valentine’s Day. It is kind of fun to have a day to hang out with the person that you love.
Q: What is unique about your guys’ relationship, or what makes you guys work well together?
A: Michelle: We work well together because we know how to get over disagreements and accept each others’ flaws. We also communicate very well. We make sure to always share our thoughts with one another so that we’re always on the same page.
Nickolaus: Our relationship is unique because I consider Michelle in everything that I do.
Q: If you could spend Valentine’s Day in any country, where would it be and why?
A: Michelle: I’ve never really though about this. Is Valentine’s Day an international holiday? Anyway, if I could pick a country, I would probably go somewhere warm. Maybe somewhere in South America. I would love to experience the beaches, scenery, and cuisine down there with my boyfriend.
Nickolaus: Japan, because we could just buy everything out of vending machines.
Q: What is the meaning of Valentine’s Day to you?
A: Michelle: It’s just another excuse to do something special with my boyfriend … My boyfriend and I are both equally excited to go on this date, and we’re both actively making decisions on where to go. It’s not holiday just for me, it’s for both of us.
Nickolaus: Spending a day with the person you love. Making memories and reaffirming your relationship.
Sarah Dean and Elan Gansberg
Q: How long have you guys been together?
A: Just over a year.
Q: If you could do anything on Valentine’s Day, what would it be?
A: Sarah: I like the traditional dinner and a movie date.
Elan: Whatever she wants to do.
Q: Have you always liked Valentine’s Day?
A: Sarah: I used to love it in elementary school when everyone would give each other candy and little Saturday morning cartoons cards.
Elan: No, Valentine’s Day sucks when you’re single.
Q: What is your favorite holiday and why?
A: Sarah: Christmas, because it is the most wonderful time of the year!
Elan: My birthday, because it’s my day!
Q: What is unique about your guys’ relationship, or what makes you guys work well together?
A: Sarah: We are total opposites, so I have no clue how we work so well together.
Elan: She puts up with me.
Q: If you could spend Valentine’s Day in any country, where would it be and why?
A: Sarah: The Bahamas to get out of the Oregon rain.
Elan: France because it is supposed to be uber romantic.
Q: What is the meaning of Valentine’s Day to you?
A: Sarah: It’s the day to recognize your relationship and eat chocolate!
Elan: My little brother’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day, so for me, it has always been more about him than the romance.
Q: Explain your plans for Valentine’s Day this year. Or have you made any yet?
A: Sarah: Elan is going to be gone, so I’ll probably just do homework and make him make it up to me later in the week.
Elan: I’m actually going to be in Puget Sound visiting my
best friend.
Katie Riley and Richard Birmingham
Q: How long have you guys been together?
A: We have been together for nine months.
Q: If you could do anything on Valentine’s Day, what would it be?
A: All I would want to do on Valentine’s Day is relax on the couch with Richard, a movie and a bottle of wine.
Q: Have you always liked Valentine’s Day?
A: I have never really been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day, but now being with someone I love, I can see the appeal of it. I don’t think that huge displays are necessary or that you have to do something big to show your love for each other, but just being with one another is the perfect way to express your love.
Q: What is unique about your guys’ relationship, or what makes you guys work well together?
A: We work well together because we are so comfortable around each other. We are not afraid to be ourselves or show our flaws. We actually love each other because of those flaws and our realness with each other.
Q: If you could spend Valentine’s Day in any country, where would it be and why?
A: England, because Richard had family there and we have been wanting to go. It would be fun to spend the holiday getting to know new family members and being in a beautiful place like England.
Q: What is the meaning of Valentine’s Day to you?
A: To me, Valentine’s Day means spending the day with the one you love, doing what you love. If a couple enjoys sports, then they should play some sort of sport together. If they enjoy music, then they should play music together.
Q: Explain your plans for Valentine’s Day this year. Or have you made any yet?
A: For Valentine’s Day, Richard is coming up to Eugene since he lives in California. We are making dinner and watching a movie with a bottle of wine. That to me is the perfect Valentine’s Day. So, even if they can’t take a romantic trip to Paris or the Bahamas, local sweethearts still plan to do what they can to make the most of this special holiday.
