The University ranks seventh on Trojan’s list of the Top Ten Sexually Healthy Schools.
The 2010 Trojan “Sexual Health Report Card” ranked 141 schools across the nation based on data from health center representatives, student opinion and research of the campus health center and its services, including drop-in versus appointment availability, sexual health awareness programs, contraception and condom availability, HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, lecture and outreach programs for sexual health issues, student peer groups and availability of sexual assault programs.
The University Health Center’s Health Promotion Services and Peer Health group conduct classroom presentations on topics like sexual health and HIV. The health center also provides free condoms to all students and offers emergency contraception and birth control pills. Health professionals at the health center test for HIV and provide human papilloma virus vaccines for those who need it. The University’s Sexual Assault Support Services provides community education, outreach, advocacy and support to survivors of sexual violence and their families.
The Trojan company cited the importance of sexual health on campuses as the purpose of their “Sexual Health Report Card.” In their report, they also promoted their product and wrote that, “Innovation and the development of more pleasurable condoms are critical to improving our nation’s sexual health.”
However, according to the report, America overall lags in sexual health among college-aged youth.
The company’s report stated that 15- to 24-year-olds make up one fourth of sexually-active Americans, but account for 48 percent of newly diagnosed sexually transmitted infections. Only 21 states require sexual education in schools.
The report recommended that students should be provided with the educational resources to manage their sexual health and well-being.
This is the fifth year of the “Sexual Health Report Card.”
The University was ranked 11th in 2008 and 22nd in 2009.
