Bear-ying the dead
Two women visiting a graveyard last week in the Russian village of Vezhnya Tchova saw what appeared to be a normal scene: a large man in a fur coat leaning over a grave, possibly of a loved one. As the women got closer they realized, to their horror, it was not a man, but a bear that was eating the excavated remains of a corpse. After an unusually hot summer in Arctic Russia, the bears’ selection of mushrooms and berries is slim. The bears have resorted to scavenging garbage and gardens in the area. A similar event occurred in the country two years earlier, and once the first enterprising bear had torn a casket open, others were quick to catch on.
Forced feedback
Following the announcement that casual gaming empire Zynga, creators of “FarmVille,” has surpassed the stock-market value of Electronic Arts, a woman in Jacksonville, Fla., has been charged with shaking her 3-month-old baby to death for interrupting her FarmVille playing. Alexandra Tobias was arrested in January and is now pleading guilty to second-degree murder. Tobias told investigators that she became angry when her child began crying while she was playing the Facebook game.
Pounds for pay
Last Friday, a court in Brazil concluded McDonald’s must pay a former manager $17,500 to compensate for his weight gain while working there for 12 years. The 32-year-old Brazilian claimed he felt that McDonald’s forced him to sample their food everyday to make sure the food met McDonald’s high quality standards. He blames sampling the food as well as the company providing free lunches as the cause of his 65-pound weight gain.
A shot in the dark
Early last Tuesday morning, a man awoke after shooting himself in his knee. During the man’s sleepwalk, he grabbed his 9 mm handgun near his bed and proceeded to shoot himself in the knee. He told police he could not remember the incident and woke up when he heard the bang from the gun. The 63-year-old man was alone in his house at the time.
