Eugene police made a second arrest this week in connection with the beating of Oregon football placekicker Rob Beard.
Police arrested Lane Community College student Kirby Taylor Hawkins, 19, of Portland, Thursday on second-degree assault charges following the dispute early Sunday at East 17th Avenue and Hilyard Street that sent Beard to the hospital.
Hawkins’ arrest came just a day after police arrested Maurice Dion Peterson III, 20, on the same charges, in connection to the incident. Peterson is also an LCC student and played on the LCC Titans basketball team as a freshman last year.
Police offered no additional details on the arrests or the incident, citing an
ongoing investigation.
Beard, a University sophomore from Fullerton, Calif., and Oregon kicker Mike Bowlin, 18, of Mission Viejo, Calif., suffered injuries in the weekend brawl, which police said involved 20 to 40 subjects.
Though Bowlin declined medical attention, Beard was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, spent a day in the intensive care unit and later underwent facial reconstruction surgery. He has since been released from
the hospital.
