The men’s golf team capped its most successful season ever with a third place finish at the NCAA Championships over the weekend.
After advancing to match play last week, Oregon was finally eliminated in a final four matchup with Oklahoma State by a score of 3-1-1. Junior Jack Dukeminier was the only Duck to win his individual matchup against Oklahoma State, while sophomore Andrew Vijarro earned a tie. Oklahoma State went on to lose in the final at the hands of Augusta State, settling for a second-place finish.
Oregon’s route to the quarterfinals began against a familiar foe: Washington. The match went down to the wire and fittingly rested in the hands of All-American Eugene Wong. Once everyone else had finished playing, Wong finally defeated Washington’s Nick Taylor to seal a 3-2 win. Dukeminier and Vijarro were also winners in their matches.
The third-place finish was an all-time best for Oregon, concluding an exciting season. The Ducks will have plenty of awards to treasure over the offseason, as Wong was both the co-Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year and an All-American. Head coach Casey Martin took home Pac-10 Coach of the Year, and sophomore Daniel Miernicki was also a member of the All-Pac-10 first team.
Wong wins National Player of the Year
Wong was named the Division I recipient of the Jack Nicklaus Award on Sunday, an award given to the best collegiate golfer in the nation. Wong won two tournaments this year, placed second twice and placed in the top 10 in an additional three tournaments. Overall, there were just two times when he didn’t place in the top 20.
