More than 1,600 students signed a petition last term opposing the University’s New Partnership and Department of Public Safety becoming a police force.
Students have many concerns about these issues and have not been adequately asked about what would make us feel safer on our campus. We love our DPS officers exactly as they are.
In 2007, the proposed legislation would have cost students and taxpayers $4 million per year.
Over the last six years, DPS’s budget has inflated 110 percent. If the University breaks away from the state, the budget will undoubtedly continue to grow unchecked.
There have been no current fiscal plans presented for this police force.
Vote yes on the ASUO ballot measure to keep DPS a public safety department. Our campus does not need a police force. We do not know how much this will cost us — fiscally or qualitatively.
DPS has had multiple opportunities to be transparent with students, and they have not delivered.
Vote yes on DuckWeb this week to retain affordable and accountable campus public safety.
