Reporter Darin Moriki hit the nail on the head in his “Gauging the green” article from March 1. The University needs to make a more diligent effort in maintaining its status as a sustainability pioneer.
In the greater community, places like the Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity ReStore are dedicated to working toward a greener and more sustainable future.
Recently, the ReStore received a call from a concerned volunteer at the University who had found a number of solid wood chairs in a University dumpster! With the University’s permission, a member of the ReStore was able to salvage the chairs and transform them into beautiful side tables. If there had been closer communication between the University and the ReStore, we wouldn’t have to resort to dumpster diving.
A stronger relationship with specialty establishments like the ReStore would greatly benefit the University in its pursuit of that platinum rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The ReStore is dedicated to working with the University to ensure the highest level of campus sustainability.
