The ASUO, Jewish Student Union and the Cultural Forum are putting on the first-ever Mallard Madness arts and culture festival, a week of events t
hat includes the Spring Street Faire, an ASUO programs showcase and a two-day concert May 6 and 7.
The idea of holding a big-name concert on campus was brought up by the JSU and, with ASUO cooperation, it has become an attempt to connect students in a non-sports event.
“We looked at football games as a unifying event, but it seemed to come out of aggression, like ‘let’s beat the other team,’” ASUO Outreach Coordinator Brian Allen told the Emerald in November, before funding was decided.
The group has already hired A-Trak, Yeasayer, Donnis and RJD2 as the main acts for the Friday and Saturday events of the weekend. The group received $65,000 from ASUO Senate and $6,000 from RHA, and the money is going to fund the hospitality and other expenses for A-Trak and Yeasayer.
Traditionally, the Cultural Forum has held the Willamette Valley Music Festival on the Saturday of that week, but this year the festival will be the second day, with Mallard Madness putting the acts together for Friday.
Additionally, KWVA has usually organized music to play during the Street Faire, but KWVA Events Coordinator Lex Chase said this is the first time KWVA has coordinated a concert of this size in the EMU Amphitheater. This year, the KWVA birthday party, typically held in May at WOW Hall, will be a part of the festival and concert series.
