Comedian and well-known marijuana aficionado Doug Benson will be performing tonight at WOW Hall for his “I’m Still High Tour.” So, even though Wednesday was 4/20, it’s safe to assume his trademark stoner comedy will be in full effect.
Although much of his comedy is about marijuana, Benson said not all of his fans are stoners.
“I meet people all the time who like my comedy but don’t smoke weed,” he said. “And besides, my podcast isn’t about getting high. It’s about getting high and watching movies.”
In addition to touring as a stand-up comedian, Benson hosts the podcast “Doug Loves Movies,” and he helped create and perform in “The Marijuana-Logues.” He has also appeared on VH1’s “Best Week Ever,” where he commented on the week’s pop culture happenings. And last fall, his own show, “The Benson Interruption,” debuted on Comedy Central.
Perhaps his most biggest claim to fame, however, is his 2007 documentary “Super High Me.” After seeing 2004’s “Super Size Me” — Morgan Spurlock’s quest to eat nothing but McDonald’s for 30 days — Benson joked that he wanted to use the same concept but with marijuana instead of McDonald’s.
What started out as a joke became a reality. After abstaining from both marijuana and alcohol for 30 days, Benson smoked for 30 days straight. During both 30-day periods, he took various tests to compare the effects of marijuana. As a California medical marijuana patient, Benson did all his research legally.
As well as these endeavors, Benson recorded his next comedy CD last night in Sacramento.
“Not sure of the plop date, but it should be in late spring, which, in stoner time, is August,” he said. “The CD will represent what I’m doing in my touring act right now. After I record it, I’ll start working new jokes into my sets to prepare for next year’s album.”
During his show tonight, Benson said people can expect “lots of silly weed-fueled jokes and possibly a game of arcane movie trivia.”
Benson also plans to make a concert movie this summer, but he warns, “You know what happens when a stoner makes plans.”
As a professional comedian, Benson travels a lot. He said the best and worst parts of touring are the people.
“Most (people) are nice, but some are a complete buzzkill,” Benson said. “Oh, and airports suck, too.”
But despite airports and unfortunate people, Benson still enjoys his work as a professional comedian.
“I’m not going to lie; it’s a lot of fun. So much fun it’s exhausting sometimes,” he said. “I need a nap just thinking about it.”
