University freshman Matthew Tyner was elected to the 2011 ASUO Senate Seat 13, with 45 of the 62 votes cast, giving the campaign run by President-elect Ben Eckstein and Vice President-elect Katie Taylor 13 of the 20 Senate seats next year — just one shy of the supermajority required to meet, hold quorum and pass certain Senate motions.
“(This is) my first experience with the ASUO,” said Tyner, who will be representing business majors. “My main goal will be connecting average students with the ASUO and providing a voice for the business school in the ASUO.”
Next year’s ASUO Senate term begins on May 25. The 20-member body comprises five returning senators elected on the Reality Check ticket in the 2010 election; five returning members who were appointed this year and re-elected on the Ben & Katie ticket; eight members elected for the first time on the Ben & Katie ticket and two elected from the Students United ticket.
Tyner, the most recently elected senator, said he hopes the Senate can work together on next year’s goals.
“Open communication; we’re under one name — the University of Oregon — so I hope we’d all be working together with one goal in mind,” Tyner said.
The ASUO announced the winner shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday evening, though without the fanfare of the posting of Eckstein’s and Taylor’s victory. Where last Thursday’s posting seemed to be an unexpected ceremony, yesterday’s was a quiet conclusion.
