After a stellar weekend against the defending national champion UCLA Bruins, a pair of Oregon softball players received recognition for their efforts from the Pacific-10 Conference Tuesday afternoon.
With the No. 11 Ducks (39-14, 11-10 Pac-10) defeating the Bruins for the first time in six years, including the end of a 15-game losing streak, Oregon senior Brittany Rumfelt and freshman catcher Alexa Peterson were named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week for May 9-15, league commissioner Larry Scott announced.
Peterson was the only player to hit safely in all three contests with UCLA, and she led the Ducks in batting (.714), hits (5) and on-base percentage (.750), and she ranked second in slugging (.714) and third in total bases (5).
The Salem native holds a current six-game hitting streak, and she also leads the team in Pac-10 action in batting (.356), hits (21) and multi-hit games (6).
Rumfelt made two appearances against UCLA, including her first career start against the Bruins on Senior Day. During that game, Rumfelt struck out seven and scattered three hits during her six innings of work, which led to a 5-0 Oregon victory.
The Lakeport, Calif., native held the Bruins to a .148 batting average during her time in the circle.
The player of the week honors were the first for both Peterson’s and Rumfelt’s careers, and the pair joined sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore, who earned the same recognition in late February.
